Kicking off our 2024/25 Speaker season is BBC Commentator Kevin Howells. For those that dont know, Kevin is the voice of the County game on the BBC, and what he doesn't know about the county game isn't worth knowing !
Kevin joined the BBC in May 1985 as a 17year old just at the start of BBC Radio Shropshire, which he remains convinced will forever be the best days of his working life.
Aside from two years working for John Cravens Newsround !, Kevin spent the next 15 years having a great time at various local BBC radio stations up and down the country presenting all sorts of programmes.
He decided to give it all up "when machines started picking the same old music to be played on the radio (Dull)" and he moved into sport, and thankfully for all of us, cricket became his number one interest when working at Radio Leeds after taking on the job of covering Yorkshire County cricket club. That involved spending time with a good bunch of players, including Darren Gough, a young Michael Vaughan and Matthew Hoggard to name a few.
Kevin has visited the Society before though many years ago, and we are very much looking forward to seeing him again this year.
To wet your appetite, here is an interesting clip from 2012 - the questions raised by Kevin 12 years ago are just as relevant today - Kevin is clearly a man ahead of his time !
