Our New President, Martyn Moxon
The Society is very pleased and proud to announce the appointment of Martyn Moxon as President of the Wombwell Cricket Lovers’ Society, succeeding the late Dickie Bird OBE, who sadly passed away last year.
Martyn Moxon was born in Stairfoot, Barnsley in 1960 and from an early age had a close association with the Wombwell Cricket Lovers’ Society through his parents, Derek and Audrey, who were leading lights within the Society for many years. Derek ran the WCLS Junior Coaching Scheme for several years, so it was no surprise that Martyn took his first steps into playing cricket that way, becoming one of several Yorkshire players who have followed that path, including most recently Joe Root.
Martyn made his debut in Yorkshire’s first team in 1980, joining Geoffrey Boycott as an opening batter. He went on to play ten Test Matches for England and eight ODIs, a tally that might have been higher had his debut not been delayed by injury, the death of his father just before the 1984/5 tour of India and Sri Lanka, and the 'revolving door’ selection policies during a difficult decade for England. He captained Yorkshire during a period of great change as the club dropped its requirement that only Yorkshire-born cricketers could play for the county, appointing its first overseas player in Sachin Tendulkar from India. Martyn was also a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1993.
After retiring from playing, Martyn became Director of Coaching at Yorkshire, before moving to Durham in a similar role in 2001. He returned to a very different Yorkshire in 2007 as Director of Professional Cricket and continued in that executive role on Yorkshire's board, until 2021. In that time, together with Jason Gillespie as head coach, he oversaw Yorkshire win successive County Championships in 2014 and 2015, coming very close to a third in 2016.
Throughout the years, Martyn has continued to maintain an interest in the WCLS, last coming to present the junior coaching awards in 2019. In his new role as President of the WCLS, Martyn began by once again presenting the junior coaching awards in March 2026 just days after being appointed.
The Society would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Martyn and to wish him every success in his new role with us.
